PETTY CRIMES (2022)

With folksy framework and shoegaze sonics, Baha’s debut album Petty Crimes is “country radio with bad reception.” Drawing on his background as a filmmaker, Baha aimed to create an album that feels like “a movie without visuals” with a narrative loosely based on the infamous Bonnie and Clyde. Hardly the picture of pastoral, Baha subverts Canadian folk by pulling from his multicultural roots: the blue humor of Trinidadian calypso and the hypnotic riffs of Italian tarantella. Rather than settle on a distinct tone of voice, Baha uses each track to experiment and shape-shift, while navigating a constant hum of heartbreak.
